Statement from James L. Kaufman - April 14, 2020

The Abbott House family once again has suffered the tragic loss of a resident in our care due to Covid-19. Giovanni, known affectionately as “the boss,” lived in our Pine Court home for more than 10 years. It was within these walls that he forged some of his closest relationships, and despite being non-verbal, found ways to connect with our compassionate direct care staff who cheered him on every day.

Giovanni had a quiet disposition and could often be found listening to music through his headphones or simply reading a magazine. He will be missed deeply, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all those who knew and loved him, especially his two sisters who were very much a part of his life. Our thoughts and prayers remain with them as they mourn the passing of their brother.

Each and every individual in our care is an extension of our family at Abbott House. This belief compels us to do everything in our power to protect their health and well-being. Today’s painful loss is a reminder of the unimaginable challenges our dedicated staff face every day on the frontlines of caregiving. They are the backbone of our mission, and we salute their courage, compassion and selfless dedication to serving others.
