The Life and Legacy of Mary E. Smith

"I daily give thanks to God for his abundant blessings and the countless opportunities that I have been bestowed with which enabled me to share with others." -Mary Smith

Mary E. Smith served on the Board of Directors of Abbott House for 20 years. Her life journey, marked by profound personal and professional achievements, serves as an inspiring example for all those who are committed to helping others.

Mary was born and raised in New Rochelle, New York, a place that always held a special place in her heart. She was a dedicated student and skilled educator. Before pursuing higher education, Mary married and had three children: a daughter, Deon, and two sons, Robert and Brian. The birth of her son Brian, who had unique needs, inspired Mary to dedicate her life to special education.

Mary's academic journey was one of excellence and determination. She earned her bachelor's degree in just three years from the College of New Rochelle, followed by a master's degree in science, majoring in Therapeutic and Psychological Education. Her passion for education led her to the New Rochelle School District, where she served as an Elementary Teacher and a middle-school Learning Disability Specialist. Her interest in reading difficulties among students motivated her to pursue a second master's degree in reading and a permanent certification in Supervision and Administration from Manhattan College.

Mary's commitment to community service was unwavering. As a member of the Zeta Phi Beta, Inc. Sorority, she was a Charter Member of the Alpha Omega Zeta Chapter. Her dedication to service extended to her role as the chair of the Kinship Connection for Adults and as a reading mentor.

Mary volunteered for numerous organizations, including the New Rochelle Chapter of the NAACP, the Black Democrats of Westchester, and the Westchester Black Women's Political Caucus. She also served on the boards of Abbott House and the City of New Rochelle's Planning Board. Notably, Mary served on Abbott House’s board for 20 years, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts.

Legacy and Recognition

Mary was recognized in "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities" and was inducted into the Kappa Delta Phi Honor Society in Education. She spent her life serving people and supporting in a special way those who nurture, shelter, teach, and influence others.

Mary's legacy inspires all of us at Abbott House to carry forward her selfless mission of service. The creation of The Mary E. Smith Scholarship Award supports staff in their educational pursuits, empowering them to use their talents to serve others and make a meaningful impact in the world, just as Mary did.
